Central Alberta Older Adult Employment Strategy Assessment Project 2023

Presented by:
The Golden Circle Senior Resource Centre
in partnership with the Red Deer & District Chamber of Commerce

The Golden Circle Senior Resource Centre, in partnership with the Red Deer & District Chamber of Commerce, with funding provided by the Province of Alberta, initiated the Central Alberta Older Adult Employment Strategy Assessment Project in April 2023.

The project sought to understand the current barriers to employment faced by adults over 55 in Central Alberta (from here forward “Individuals”), as well as the needs of employers confronting a shortage of skilled, experienced, and available labour (from here forward “Employers”). By exploring the region’s current employment services and listening to the experiences of Individuals and Employers, significant gaps and resources were identified within the 248 voices represented. The report provides recommendations to enhance systems navigation, address the intersectionality of ageism, gender, ability, and ethnicity, leverage community partnerships, and tailor resources specifically for adults over 55 and employers.

June 27 is Multiculturalism Day!

June 27 is Multiculturalism Day!

Did you know that on November 13, 2002, the Government of Canada, by Royal Proclamation, designated June 27 of each year as Canadian Multiculturalism Day? This significant day is an opportunity for Canadians to celebrate our country’s rich cultural mosaic and recognize the valuable role that Canadians from all backgrounds play in helping to build vibrant and prosperous communities that benefit everyone.

Multiculturalism Day is intended to encourage individuals to reflect on our shared commitment to democracy, equality and mutual respect, and to remind us of the important role that we can play in helping to promote mutual understanding and respect for Canadians of all backgrounds.

At the Golden Circle, we are committed to ensuring that people of all backgrounds have a place here because we understand that celebrating diversity creates stronger communities. In doing so, we can help to overcome biases and stereotypes, allowing us to see and know people as they are, not as who we think they should be.

It’s a natural inclination to surround ourselves with people who are like ourselves, but when we start to open ourselves up to learning about and embracing other cultures we will discover that we’re actually more alike than we are different! When we become better allies to one another, there are important social, institutional and organizational impacts as a result. Discouraging racism and encouraging unity helps us all to coexist in a much better way. We may all be distinctly unique, but we live together in our communities and face similar challenges. If we better understand and care for others and celebrate our differences rather than allowing them to keep us apart, we are better able to face our collective problems because we truly are better together.

We at the Golden Circle are proud to be a welcoming space where all can feel comfortable to come. We pride ourselves on being an intergenerational gathering space where we ensure that we show respect always through ensuring privacy, dignity and acceptance for all. We believe in providing a barrier free facility and activities to our community and promote and provide programs and services that will enhance people’s ability to live independently, happily and healthfully.

City of Red Deer’s Mayor’s Recognition Awards 2022

Congratulations Glenn Allen!

Nominated by the Mengagement team and enthusiastically supported by the Golden Circle, last night at the City of Red Deer’s Mayor’s Recognition Awards the Golden Circle’s very own Glenn Allen was recognized with an award for Distinguished Voluntary Service. (Thank you to Doug Janssen for being the paparazzi for us last night!)

Glenn is an active member and former Board member. He has been a driving force in the enhancement and execution of men’s programming at the Golden Circle Senior Resource Centre. His compassionate nature, strategic and visionary thinking, willingness to tackle challenging issues and his leadership skills have resulted in the formation of Mengagement at the Golden Circle. Glenn and the Mengagement lead team members have a vision to engage men in life and living and to develop activities that encourage socialization, connection, learning, serving and fun to enhance a sense of safety, identity, belonging, purpose, worthiness, and healthy aging.

The hard work of the Mengagement lead team and Glenn’s dedicated leadership have greatly benefitted men not only in the city of Red Deer but surrounding communities as well and we are so pleased to see that he was given this incredible honour by Mayor Ken Johnston. Glenn, thank you for all you are and all you do – we are so lucky to have you as a part of our community.

From Our Executive Director – June 17, 2022

We’ve reached the end of a very soggy week here in Red Deer, I hope that you have all managed to stay dry for the most part!

While we were all still recovering from the events and the excitement of Seniors’ Week, we managed through another very busy week which included a lot of really delicious food – thank you as always to our amazing kitchen team for keeping us well fed – and hosting some special guests! As you will see in upcoming pages, we hosted an event on Wednesday, June 15 to bring awareness to World Elder Abuse Day where Mayor Ken Johnston gave an excellent speech, Board Chair Linda Liptak did her best to convince him to become a volunteer and Theresa’s delicious hot lunch had him committing to joining us for more meals! We will be sure to include invitations to the entire Council team for our various events and activities. In fact – Councillor Dianne Wyntjes even signed up as a member on Wednesday so not only were we able to bring awareness to such an important issue, we were able to highlight the great work that we do here at the Golden Circle; a win-win situation indeed!

While my mind is on food, which is often if I’m being honest, I have a couple of kitchen updates to share. Supply chain issues have impacted us recently and we have had to temporarily remove Chicken Cordon Bleu from the frozen meal menu. We will update you as soon as that is back to normal. Also – based on some feedback received Theresa and I have been exploring menu options and ideas and we are soon going to be offering vegetarian options as well! We love to hear feedback from you, our members, about what you like and don’t like as much, and what kinds of things you hope to see on the menu or for lunches so please do not hesitate to bring your ideas forward because we are listening! Please share your ideas with Theresa or with me directly or send them to our general mailbox [email protected]

Lastly, I have received a few complaints at the last couple of ticketed events from people wanting to come into the building prior to the doors opening for events that I wanted to ensure were addressed. I understand that all are eager and excited to get in and get a good spot, but I need to reiterate that if the doors are scheduled to open at a specific time, that is when they will be opened. We simply do not have the space to have dozens of people milling in the lobby or the hallway and oftentimes staff and event volunteers are still getting set up and ready prior to those start. I know that there are technically no provincial restrictions anymore from a Covid-standpoint, but it is very important to me and to our entire team that we are doing all we can to keep everyone comfortable and safe and I thank you for your understanding.

As always, please do not hesitate to share your thoughts, ideas, feedback or concerns with me, I truly value and welcome your input.

Have a wonderful weekend, Golden Circle Community.

Elder Abuse Awareness Day – Wednesday, June 15, 2022

What is Elder Abuse?

Any action or inaction by a person(s) in a trusting relationship that causes harm and distress to an older adult.

Types of Elder Abuse

Elder abuse can take several forms, often with more than one type of abuse occurring at the same time for individuals. National and provincial statistics indicate that the two most identified and reported types of elder abuse are financial and psychological.

Financial Abuse

This is “the misuse of an older person’s funds or property through fraud, trickery, theft or force.” It can include, but is not limited to:

  • the misuse of money or property
  • convincing an older person to buy a product or give away money
  • stealing money or possessions
  • misusing bank or credit cards
  • misusing joint banking accounts
  • forging a signature on pension cheques or legal documents
  • misusing a power of attorney

Psychological or Emotional Abuse

This may take the form of verbal aggression, humiliation, isolation, intimidation, threats and inappropriate control of activities. In all cases, it diminishes the identity and self-worth of older people. It can also provoke intense fear, anxiety or debilitating stress.

It can include, but is not limited to:

  • removal of decision-making power while the person is competent
  • withholding affection for manipulative purposes
  • refusing access to grandchildren
  • denying privacy in institutions
  • forcing older people to do degrading things
  • controlling activities
  • treating them like children
  • attacking their self-esteem
  • intentionally frightening them

Physical Abuse

Physical abuse is the use of physical force causing discomfort which may or may not result in bodily injury, physical pain, or impairment. Older persons who are subjected to rough handling or mistreatment are the victims of physical abuse.

It can include, but is not limited to:

  • slapping
  • shaking
  • pushing
  • kicking
  • punching
  • striking with an object or weapon
  • deliberate exposure to severe weather
  • unnecessary physical restraint
  • forced confinement
  • failure to provide adequate health care

Sexual Abuse

All unwanted forms of sexual activity, behaviour, assault or harassment to older persons is elder sexual abuse.

It can include, but is not limited to:

  • verbal or suggestive behaviour
  • fondling
  • unwanted sexual intercourse
  • lack of personal privacy
  • being forced to commit degrading acts
  • unnecessary help with dressing/hygiene

Neglect

This is the intentional or unintentional failure to provide for the needs of someone. Neglect can be active (intentional) or passive (unintentional) and has the effect of failing to provide older persons with basic necessities or care.

It can include, but is not limited to:

  • failure to provide a safe, warm and comfortable place to live
  • denial of social contacts and/or interaction
  • failure to provide personal hygiene
  • failure to provide proper food or clean clothing
  • failure to provide aids for daily living, (hearing aids, walkers, canes, wheelchairs, etc.)
  • failure to prevent physical harm
  • abandonment or desertion

Self-neglect, while not technically considered abuse, is also a significant concern. It involves cases whereby, older adults, by choice or ignorance, live in ways that disregard their health or safety needs and can in some cases pose a hazard to others.

Medication Abuse

This is the misuse of an older person’s medications and prescriptions.
It can include, but is not limited to:

  • withholding medication
  • overmedicating
  • sedation
  • not complying with prescriptions refills

LEAVING A LEGACY

We are proud of the excellent services we provide and know that the Golden Circle holds a special place in the hearts of many. Did you know that you can provide support to the Golden Circle after you’re gone? Our Leaving a Legacy program will outlast your lifetime and touch the lives of future generations.

Many people have the desire to demonstrate their strong commitment to the Golden Circle by being provided with the opportunity to reflect that commitment in their Will. Leaving a Legacy establishes an opportunity for donors to give a gift to benefit the Golden Circle, its members, and the community; either currently or in the future and will help to ensure that the Golden Circle will be able to continue to meet the needs of the community through its programs and outreach services for a very long time.

Leaving a Legacy gifts are kept separate from regular operating funds, but can be used to cover regular and ongoing operational requirements of the Golden Circle, as well as to ensure all members of the community have affordable access to programs and services.

No gift is too small to make a difference, and we do accept designated legacy gifts. We will acknowledge that you have made a decision to provide for the Golden Circle and its support of the social health and wellness of adults in our community. It is a unique opportunity to have a “voice” in the future of the Golden Circle because a gift to Leaving a Legacy is an investment and an opportunity to be involved in the future growth of the Golden Circle; by contributing to Leaving a Legacy today, your gift will ensure that the support and information continue to be provided for a thousand tomorrows.
