June 27 is Multiculturalism Day!

Did you know that on November 13, 2002, the Government of Canada, by Royal Proclamation, designated June 27 of each year as Canadian Multiculturalism Day? This significant day is an opportunity for Canadians to celebrate our country’s rich cultural mosaic and recognize the valuable role that Canadians from all backgrounds play in helping to build vibrant and prosperous communities that benefit everyone.

Multiculturalism Day is intended to encourage individuals to reflect on our shared commitment to democracy, equality and mutual respect, and to remind us of the important role that we can play in helping to promote mutual understanding and respect for Canadians of all backgrounds.

At the Golden Circle, we are committed to ensuring that people of all backgrounds have a place here because we understand that celebrating diversity creates stronger communities. In doing so, we can help to overcome biases and stereotypes, allowing us to see and know people as they are, not as who we think they should be.

It’s a natural inclination to surround ourselves with people who are like ourselves, but when we start to open ourselves up to learning about and embracing other cultures we will discover that we’re actually more alike than we are different! When we become better allies to one another, there are important social, institutional and organizational impacts as a result. Discouraging racism and encouraging unity helps us all to coexist in a much better way. We may all be distinctly unique, but we live together in our communities and face similar challenges. If we better understand and care for others and celebrate our differences rather than allowing them to keep us apart, we are better able to face our collective problems because we truly are better together.

We at the Golden Circle are proud to be a welcoming space where all can feel comfortable to come. We pride ourselves on being an intergenerational gathering space where we ensure that we show respect always through ensuring privacy, dignity and acceptance for all. We believe in providing a barrier free facility and activities to our community and promote and provide programs and services that will enhance people’s ability to live independently, happily and healthfully.
