Connecting with Older Adults, One Call Can Male Such a Difference!

Call an older adult today – a simple phone call can make a huge difference!
Census data shows almost one in four Canadians aged 65 and older live alone and about half over the age of 80 reports feeling lonely, according to a report from the National Seniors Council.
Numerous studies have linked loneliness to health issues including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, mental health struggles, and the onset of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

STAYING ACTIVE WITHIN YOUR COMMUNITY

Physical activity during the winter months can be a challenge, thankfully, we have some ideas for you. The Circle offers classes for Zumba, Yoga, Stretch – Flex & Strengthen and Steppin’ Cardo.

You might also enjoy the bright, warm and safe indoor walking track free of charge at the Servus Arena. The walking track is 206 meters so five laps around the track equal one kilometre. The track is open for drop-in use, Monday to Friday between 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

105 Years’ Young!

Happy Birthday Violet Elliot!
A very familiar face in the Red Deer community, and a long-time member of the Golden Circle, is celebrating her 105th Birthday in February. Violet was born on February 6th, 1917 in Scotland. She met the love of her life, a Canadian soldier, during WWII and married him on March 4, 1943. Vi was a nurse in Scotland and it was hard leaving her job, as well as her homeland, to follow her husband, but she did. After coming to Red Deer, she took a position at Lindsey Thurber High School, as a nurse, and started her public health nursing career in Canada. Vi has touched many people in her life’s journey and we want to congratulate Violet for reaching her 105th birthday.

February is Black History Month

February is Black History Month
It is a time to recognize and honour the legacy of Black Canadians past and present. Take time and learn about people that have made Canada great. Take time and honour the people right here in our own community. Take the time to participate in community learning events during this month. The Golden Circle encourages each and every one of you to partake in the celebrations and learn.

What is Medication Non-Adherence?

Medication non-adherence is when a patient doesn’t take a medication, either willfully or inadvertently, as prescribed by their healthcare provider. Studies have shown that 50% of Canadians do not take their prescription medications exactly as prescribed. The reasons for this vary from a lack of information to being afraid to take medication or believing it doesn’t work, to an inability to follow instructions that may be too complex. Each year, medication non-adherence results in many hospital admissions. Your pharmacist can help provide you with the information you need to make the right decisions about when and how to take your medications.
